Why Our Focus on Community Colleges
"In the coming years, jobs requiring at least an associate degree are projected to grow twice as fast as jobs requiring no college experience. We will not fill those jobs – or keep those jobs on our shores – without the training offered by community colleges.” – President Barack Obama
More than half of undergraduate students enrolled in post-secondary institutions in the United States attend community colleges. They serve a large population of low-income students and immigrants. Community colleges provide an inexpensive pathway for millions of Americans who aspire to obtain a college education but who might otherwise been unable to afford the steep cost of tuition. As America fights its way back from an economic downturn which forced many to delay their higher education dreams, community colleges have become the starting point for both young and adult learners. Community colleges have been called the economic hub of their communities. These colleges serve as the workforce development center for citizens in need of training or re-training which is vital to developing and maintaining a competitive workforce. There are more than 1,200 community colleges throughout the United States.
