Parents can help children establish and maintain good mental health in 3 ways:
1. Focus on their strengths! Children encounter so much negativity...in school, on social media, the Internet, and even in video games. So, taking the time to focus and remind a child of all of their strengths is the first step towards good mental health.
2. Children need a good role model. As a parent, your job is to make sure your child is surrounded by a positive mentor. This may be you as the parent, their teacher, coach, religious leader, family friend, etc. So, find or be someone who can provide a strong connection for your child. Studies have shown the value of connection and how powerful that can be in a child's mental health.
3. Teach children how to manage their emotions. Positively coping with strong emotions is a skill that is quite beneficial for children to learn early. Strong emotional intelligence can also have better outcomes in their adult years.
