Preventing Summer Learning Loss (SLL), also known as the Summer Slide (SS), doesn't have to be complicated for students who want to enjoy their summer vacation, beautiful weather, swimming, or playing with their friends. Each day, 20 minutes of enjoyable reading with a parent, sibling, friend, or another relative, can assist with staying on par with sight word acknowledgement. Once reading becomes instruction during the summer, a loss of reading enjoyment and engagement is often apparent. This doesn't mean that there isn't value in summer learning programs or enrichment programs which have evidence of saving the slide from happening--often a loss of 1-3 reading levels or even 1 grade level of skills based learning over a typical 2 month span. Simply setting up a regular routine where 20 minutes or reading is utilized each day is a good start. Try a fun trip to your local library and let your child choose what he or she wants to read. Just be sure that their selections are not levels below their current capabilities.
