Dr. Mike Robinson, host of 3 Questions interviewed Dr. Fatima Williams Castro regarding professional development for educators.
Bio: Fatimah Williams Castro, Ph.D. is the founder of Beyond the Tenure Track, a career strategy and professional development-consulting firm that helps graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, and faculty to leverage their voice, talent, and skills into meaningful and successful careers. She is a speaker, author, and career coach whose professional development guidance has been featured in The Chronicle of Higher Education, Scientific American, University Affairs, Rutgers Today, and numerous podcasts and radio programs.
Dr. Williams Castro holds a doctorate in Cultural Anthropology from Rutgers University and bachelor’s degrees in Foreign Affairs and African American Studies from the University of Virginia. Awarded the nationally competitive Consortium for Faculty Diversity Postdoctoral Fellowship in 2011, Dr. Williams Castro has published scholarship in the Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Anthropology, Latin American Perspectives, and Anthropology Now.
She is the recipient of awards, including the Inter-American Foundation Grassroots Development Fellowship, New Jersey Minority Academic Career Fellowship, and Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship (honorable mention), and is an alumna of The Philips Academy Institute for the Recruitment of
Teachers.
Prior to founding Beyond the Tenure Track, Dr. Williams Castro worked in nonprofit management as the founding program manager of the New Jersey Partnership for Healthy Kids, an initiative of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and as a consultant with clients such as the National Institutes of Health, March of Dimes, Northeast Public Health Leadership Institute, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. She is the 2012 recipient the Johnson & Johnson HONOR Committee Community Service Award for her community
involvement in the U.S. and internationally.
Dr. Williams Castro is the chair of the Workshops Committee of the National Association for the Practice of Anthropology and a member of the Graduate Career Consortium and the National Postdoctoral Association. Additionally, Dr. Williams Castro is the former Associate Director at the University of Pennsylvania Career Services. She has spoken on professional development for academics at various universities and organizations across the country to include Princeton University, Yale University, and the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity. Dr. Williams Castro enjoys bridging her experiences inside and outside of the academy to assist academics on their journey to doing purposeful work with confidence.
