Why She Would be Interested in Serving as an Alumni Representative on the KSU Presidential Search Committee
Dr. Michael Robinson, the host of The Yard, was joined by Shawnda H. Parker, a 2007 graduate of Kentucky State University who currently practices criminal defense law throughout Texas, with her principal office located in Houston.
Attorney Parker shared how Kentucky State University infused her with a passion for others and a desire to impact her community. Mrs. Parker also talked about the need for Kentucky State University alumni to be actively involved with their local chapters and the national office of the Kentucky State Alumni Association. Attorney Parker discussed the significance, importance, and value of having alumni representation on the Presidential Search Committee for the next President of Kentucky State University.

Attorney Shawnda H. Parker is a native of Detroit, Michigan, and is a 2007 graduate of Kentucky State University. Attorney Parker currently practices criminal defense law throughout the state of Texas, with her principal office located in Houston. She also serves as the Secretary of the Houston Chapter of the Kentucky State University National Alumni Association.
During her time at KSU, Shawnda pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and served as the Alpha Pi Chapter Secretary and later, President. Attending Kentucky State instilled a deep sense of duty to serve and uplift students of color, and specifically, students of HBCUs. Attorney Parker served as President of the Black Law Students Association (BLSA) at South Texas College of Law, where she established a “BLSA Bootcamp” to introduce law school fundamentals to incoming BLSA members. She has also served as a professor of Criminal Justice at two Historically Black Colleges: Jarvis Christian College and Texas College.
Attorney Parker has over eighteen years of experience in Criminal Justice, assisting in high-profile and complex criminal investigations - including child abductions, homicides, organized crime, and human trafficking with premier law enforcement agencies such as the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Houston Police Department. After becoming a licensed attorney, she began her legal career as a criminal prosecutor and also represented the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in cases of child abuse and neglect. These experiences enlightened Attorney Parker to the depths of injustices in the Criminal Justice system and led her to open her own law firm in 2016.
Attorney Parker is married to her husband of eight years, and they share two young sons.
