Equity in education means providing students with curriculum, teaching strategies, assessments, and non-academic opportunities that meet their individual needs. This ultimately means student-centered decision-making focusing on promoting success and independence for all students based on what these ideals mean for each student. To truly achieve this, families must be included and considered in this process. Consider the family’s needs, access, culture, circumstances and connect with them to include them in the child's education.
Equity in education matters in student achievement because the absence of equity leaves room for the achievement gap to continue to grow. How can we expect students to excel academically under a one size fits all educational setting? Our students come to us from culturally and linguistically backgrounds, from a range of cognitive levels of functioning, and with a myriad of lived experiences. This level of diversity presents a beautiful opportunity for educators to adapt and innovate for equity in education.
