School Smart is an easy to read guidebook that steers parents and educators through a school year, touching on the significant milestones encountered and explaining how best to help children navigate those experiences. Each school year is a journey through which we have the privilege of coaching our children to make smart choices. Teachers and parents have different roles, yet both are steering toward the same destination. If we think of school as a sports game, then the child is the star player and we are the coaches on the sidelines, guiding and cheering them as they fumble, score, and pass. The author, a parent and teacher, provides valuable suggestions and tools for success while also acknowledging pitfalls every teacher, parent, and student faces.

Shauna King, Ed.S. is an educational consultant who also serves as adjunct faculty for LaSalle University, a school climate coach with The University of Maryland Positive Schools Center and a certified presenter for The Upside Down Organization. She is a former principal and middle school teacher with over 20 years of experience in public and non-public school settings. Shauna has a talent and passion for connecting with adults who have chosen to serve children. This passion has led to invitations to share with educators and parents nationally as well as internationally. A self- proclaimed “Yelling Teacher in Recovery”, Shauna supports districts and schools that are implementing positive and proactive initiatives. Shauna is the author of School Smart: It’s more than Just Reading and Writing and her articles on teacher language and transitions at the middle level have been featured in the AMLE magazine. King holds a Bachelor’s Degree from Morgan State University, a Master’s degree in Education from Bowie State University and an Education Specialist degree in Adult Learning from Walden University. An active member of her church and community, Shauna is also a proud wife and mother of two children, who are the joy of her life.
