5 FACTS TO CREATING A STUDENT CENTERED CAMPUS
Leslie Thomas
1. Be visible - Get out of your office and mingle with the students. Go to games, events, stop by the cafe, be around during busy times like registration. Even if they don't know your name they will know your face.
2. Practice an open door policy and yes that means truly an open door that allows students to feel comfortable coming to talk to you about anything they need...whether it's class, financial aid or a family situation.
3. Always encourage the students. Sometimes a few words of positive reinforcement is all a student needs to give that extra push or get back on track towards successfully graduating.
4. DO NOT JUDGE - meet students where they are, accept their baggage, shortcomings, tough environments, etc. This doesn't mean to condone behavior that isn't conducive to their succeeding in college. It means ACCEPTING them and CORRECTING them, but you must complete tips 1, 2 and 3 to get to the point where you will be able to fulfill this important segment of creating a student friendly campus.
5. Last and certainly not least, is simple and powerful Love them and let them know you BELIEVE in them.
