Dr. Vernell Bennett
Embracing Change Will Make It Better
Dr. Vernell Bennett is proud to have spent twenty years as a Kentucky State University Thorobred!
BIO:
A native of Lorain, Ohio, Dr. Bennett began her career at Kentucky State University (KSU) as a non-tenure tract Instructor of Music and advanced to the rank of tenured Associate Professor before transitioning to several administration roles with her most recent being Vice President of Student Affairs. Dr. Bennett is the founder and director of Operation Half-Note Incorporated, a music institute geared toward pre-kindergartners that she founded at KSU. Bennett earned a Governor’s Award in the Arts for this groundbreaking program. Dr. Bennett leaves a legacy at KSU as the creative mind behind the Thorobred Express mobile recruitment initiative. Her accomplishments at KSU are innumerable but some of her most noteworthy include the aforementioned and having served as the President of the Faculty Senate for two consecutive terms. To date, she is the youngest person to serve as the Senate president. Dr. Bennett is a graduate of Leadership Kentucky, a Kentucky Colonel, and is a former Who’s Who Among College and University Professors. Her most prized honors are those bestowed upon her by the students which include KSU Girls Rock, Woman of the Year, and the SGA Award of Appreciation. Dr. Bennett’s student service activities included but weren’t limited to: Advisor, K-Rette Dance Squad Advisor for 18 years; Advisor, Miss KSU; Advisor, Beta Zeta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated; Coordinator, Honda Campus All-Star Challenge Team; Coach, Ford Academic Challenge Team; Advisor and founder, Student Advocates for Latino and Spanish Acknowledgement (SALSA); and Founder and Director, Operation Half-Note, Incorporated. She also served as the University Orator. Dr. Bennett received a Bachelor’s of Music from Fisk University, a Master of Arts from Eastern Michigan University, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Kentucky. My absolute love for Kentucky State University is grounded in the relationships that I’ve been blessed to develop with students over two decades!
