Tonight, we are discussing Generation Rx—Prescription Safety Education Partnership with Kanawha County Schools and the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy. Our guests are Jon Duffy, Director of Counseling and Testing with Kanawha County Schools with Kanawha County Schools, Andrew Van Deusen a third-year student of the pharmacy school at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy, and Emily Patterson a school counselor at Overbrook Elementary in Charleston, WV.
The University of Charleston School of Pharmacy offers its student pharmacists a technology-infused, dynamic, and rigorous curriculum that prepares graduates to practice in today’s rapidly changing health care environment. Our student pharmacists are trained to know about the body, medications, and what happens when medications enter a healthy body as well as a diseased body. Tonight Guests are Andrew Van Deusen and Emily R. Patterson
Andrew Van Deusen is in his third year of pharmacy school at the University of Charleston School of Pharmacy. As President of the school’s chapter of American Pharmacists Association Academy of Student Pharmacists, he has help spearhead the Generation Rx initiative which focuses on educating elementary school students about the importance of drug safety. Andrew graduated with his Bachelors of Pharmaceutical Sciences from The Ohio State University before moving to West Virginia to further his pharmacy education. He has strong interests in the cutting-edge scientific advancements and pharmaceutical discoveries responsible for improving patient outcomes. |
Emily Patterson is the school counselor at Overbrook Elementary in Charleston, WV. She earned her BA in Psychology from West Virginia Wesleyan College, her MA in Psychology from Western Kentucky University, and her M.Ed. in Counseling from Vanderbilt University with certifications in both Mental Health and School Counseling. She started her career in mental health counseling by working for a non-profit organization in Nashville, TN. She was assigned to work with several local schools providing drug and alcohol prevention and intervention activities with students and their families. She started her career as a school counselor in 2000 and has worked at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. She is a National Certified Counselor as well as a National Certified School Counselor and serves as the Lead Elementary Counselor for Kanawha County Schools. |
