Living Education eFocus News host Michel Davis Robinson talked with Dr. Kathryn Bell McKenzie about the concept of teaching equity in the classroom and its impact on student achievement and school climate.
Dr. Kathryn Bell McKenzie is professor of Advanced Studies and director of the Educational Leadership Program at California State University Stanislaus, as well as associate professor emerita at Texas A&M University. Prior to becoming a professor Dr. McKenzie was a public school educator serving as a teacher, curriculum specialist, and principal for nearly 25 years. She has an international reputation with both P-12 and university educators who have used her work on equity traps and equity audits to improve educational practices that advance equity and excellence. She has numerous journal publications and books. Dr. McKenzie is also an educational consultant, writer, and speaker.

Living Education eFocus News host Michel Davis Robinson talked with Detroit Public Schools (DPS) educator Dr. Jeneen Montgomery about the conditions, challenges and the emotional strain associated with the recent crisis involving DPS. Dr. Janeene Montgomery has worked for the Detroit Public school district since 1997.
Dr. Janeene Montgomery has worked for the Detroit Public school district since 1997. She spent the first thirteen years of her career as a classroom teacher and went on to work in the capacity of Literacy Coach. Currently, Dr. Montgomery heads a reading program for an elementary/middle school. Her dedication and love for the children and families of Detroit is what drives her to keep working on their behalf. Dr. Montgomery believes that her job is a calling and feels blessed to be able to support teachers and empower students to achieve their life goals despite any barriers they face. Dr. Montgomery is married with two sons. She is grateful that God placed trust in her to raise two amazing children, and to be the wife of such a caring and kind man. A strong advocate for service to her community, she is a mentor for Such A Lady mentor program, volunteer for her neighborhood association, and the leader of a women’s empowerment group. She is also the recipient of the National Honor Roll of Outstanding American Teachers. Dr. Montgomery’s research focused on working conditions and technology integration within urban schools. Her work has been published in ProQuest Research Library. She is a proud graduate of Kentucky State University and a native of Louisville, Kentucky. She credits her success to God and her family, and believes that her upbringing in the Newburg community has given her the tools she needs to inspire others to dream big!!!

W. Steven Barnett, Ph.D. is Board of Governors Professor of Education and Director of the National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) at Rutgers University. Dr. Barnett is an internationally recognized expert on early childhood policy and programs who has served as consultant to scores of states and national leaders in the United States and numerous countries around the world. His research includes wide ranging studies on early childhood policy and economics including: research on long-term effects of early education programs; benefit-cost analyses of the Perry Preschool and Abecedarian programs; randomized trials of alternative approaches to educating bilingual/migrant populations and the Tools of the Mind curriculum (focusing on executive function); and, the series of State Preschool Yearbooks providing annual state-by-state analyses of progress in public pre-K. Recent publications include “Effectiveness of early educational intervention” in the journal Science. Dr. Barnett earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan.

Kevin Sterling Walker is Project Appleseed's founder, president and national director. He oversees all of the current and future programs of the organization. As president and national director, he provides leadership in program development, organizational and financial planning while working with the volunteers, staff and board to carry out plans and policies. Hands-on work is frequently required at all levels of the president's job. Mr. Walker represents the organization's point of view to news organizations, government, agencies, organizations, and the general public.

Dr. Billie Jo Kipp, a clinical and experimental psychologist and a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, will be the Pl of this project. Dr. Kipp worked concurrently as a facilitator for the Department of Veterans Affairs Black Hills Healthcare System at Ft. Meade, SD and as a data analyst at Montana's Salish Kootenai College's All Nations Alliance for Minority Participation Program. Dr. Kipp also worked as a research associate at the University of New Mexico Center of Alcoholism, Substance Abuse and Addiction, and she assisted New Mexico's Head Start programs through her work as a local specialist for the Academy for Educational Development's American Indian Technical Assistance Network in Washington, D.C. As an associate scientist at the University of New Mexico Masters in Public Health's School of Medicine, Department of Family and Community Medicine in Albuquerque, Dr. Kipp coordinated her department in the establishment of a range of collaborative laboratory and/or field research projects. She also worked as a child and clinical psychologist at the Laguna Behavioral Health Services in Laguna, NM; child and clinical psychologist at Sandia Behavioral Health in Bernalillo, NM; co-investigator for the Community Health Paraprofessional Diabetes Specialist Training Program's Project ECHO at the University of New Mexico; and associate director of training and education at the University of New Mexico's Center for Native American Health, Department of Family and Community Medicine in Albuquerque. She is currently President of Blackfeet Community College (BCC). Dr. Kipp's research and clinical experience, has positioned her well as BCC President.

Immediately before his appointment at Marquette University, Dr. Fuller served as the Superintendent of Milwaukee Public Schools June 1991 - June 1995. Dr. Fuller received his B.S. degree in Sociology from Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin, M.S.A. degree in Social Administration from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and his Ph.D. in Sociological Foundations of Education from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He has received numerous awards and recognition over the years, including four Honorary Doctorate Degrees: Doctorate of Humane Letters from Carroll College; Doctorate of Laws from Marian College, Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin; Doctorate of Business and Economics from Milwaukee School of Engineering; Doctorate of Humane Letters from Edgewood College, Madison WI.
He is the Chair of the Board of Milwaukee Collegiate Academy. He also serves on the Board of The Black Alliance for Educational Options, Milwaukee Region Board of Teach for America, Milwaukee Charter School Advocates, Education Cities and FaithActs. He is an Advisory Board member of the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools and the National Association for Charter School Authorizers.
