How did becoming a member of a Greek Organization impact your academic success?

Let me begin by saying I come from a "legacy" of Delta's from the south Dillard and Hampton University; 1940's. I've grown up participating in Jabberwocks in Jacksonville Florida and New Orleans since I was able to walk. When I was searching for colleges to attend academics were first and an active Charter in good national standing were requirements. Grade requirements were upheld to get into the organization and to remain active in our chapter the GPA had to be maintained. Good grades were NOT because of Delta but allow me to join and maintain active status.

I come from a family of educators and social workers so "social action" through my sorority was a plus. To be able to provide service with like-minded sisters was a plus. The national and international network of women has been a valuable resources especially as I move across the country from Illinois to NOLA, to PHX and now Dallas!

What advice would you give to a student who has interest in joining a Black Greek Letter Organization?

I encourage women to seek out information about collegiate chapter and be leery of their young adult behaviors and traditions; if it does not feel right don't do and wait and join and Alum chapter! I have two daughter that are Delta's one as an undergrad Alpha Chapter and much of her growth in corporate America is directly related to her Howard education and her network of Delta's.

What do you say to those that suggest being a member of a fraternity or sorority is about being an elitist, hazing and partying?

Are we elite!? yep, some of are in a very great way! We are Black women in love with Black people especially youth and other less fortunate. We are "real" models for other youth Black women. We are bound by a sisterhood built on quality principles! Does this describe ALL Deltas and ALL chapters? Absolutely NOT, our members are human this not sin free. As For me and my daughters and bonus daughters and sisters in our circle, we strive daily to live in ways that my elder Aunts; our ancestors would be proud. We thrive daily to live up to our oath!
