Dr. Mike Robinson: Should social media platforms have the responsibility to monitor what is said, or posted by our national leaders?
Dr. Larry Walker: Over the last several years, social media platforms, including Twitter have allowed dangerous rhetoric to flourish. As a result, extremists have been able to recruit followers and plan events that are the antithesis of democracy. Each platform has enormous power. They have and will continue to shape the perceptions of Americans. How they wield their power could determine the nation's future.
Dr. Mike Robinson: What about other social media platforms like Parler that are, in many cases, believed to be anti-democratic?
Dr. Larry Walker: Recently the Google store banded Parler. Besides, the Apple store has threatened to remove the app. These steps are necessary to ensure right-wing groups' ability to grow is limited. While it's important to provide platforms to discuss pertinent issues, dangerous ideologies cannot be allowed to endanger the lives of the Black community.
Dr. Larry J. Walker is a researcher focusing on issues that affect the academic performance and socio-emotional functioning of students throughout the education pipeline. He is a previous congressional fellow with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and legislative director for former Congressman Major R. Owens.
