Believe it or not, the answer to this question doesn’t involve children at all! It’s 100% about the parents. Moms and Dads have to be the leaders in normalizing the expression of and dialogue about feelings. If parents were more transparent with children about how they feel- children would know it’s OK to talk about things such as being sad, overwhelmed, betrayed and angry. Parents can set the tone for how to put words to what’s in your heart. This is a valuable lesson which can start to normalize mental health.
