All these individuals earned a type of doctorate degree. Whether it is a PhD, JD, MD, or other earned doctorate degree credentials… what you noticed is the same thing that I did as I saw these individuals consistently on my television and the internet; these folks are doing more with their doctorate degrees than just being in the Ivory Tower of Academia. Of course, some of these earned doctorate degree individuals are still teaching at colleges and universities (Dr. Cornell West and Dr. Michael Eric Dyson), but all of them are doing things with their doctorate degrees that a lot of people never knew it was possible. From television shows to professional sports games, celebrity parties, red carpet events, and high-paying speaking engagements worldwide. From stethoscope to microphone, from campus buses to city Bentleys, from community frontlines to basketball sidelines, even from doctor to dollars! They are cool, charming, charismatic, even understandable, and relatable to the normal everyday citizens of the world today. These earned doctorate degree individuals are not just “Researchers” in higher education anymore; they are “Influencers” to the masses who are creating a different image of what can be possible with obtaining a doctorate degree.
As I worked in higher education and pushed my way through my PhD doctorate program at the Indiana University School of Education at IUPUI, I was shocked to start to see how there was a possibility that the life of publish or perish towards tenure in the confines of a higher education institution as a researcher was not my only opportunity to utilize my earned doctorate degree. Now do not get me wrong, I love the opportunity to stand in front of the classroom and provide new knowledge, data, and information to intrigued college students' minds. Coincidentally for me, I saw a different vision for my earned doctorate degree that could be employed to connect with the world at a different level. The impact would be just as great, just as inspiring, just as life-changing, and just as incredible. Fortunately for me, the effect that I wanted to have on the world was more up my alley in bringing forth more of who I am as a person; someone who likes style loves the spotlight and enjoys the celebrity scenes that attract major attention. I found another way to use my earned doctorate degree to leave an influential and impactful legacy in my eyes for the greater good in my unique way.
In the year 2021, I, Dr. John C. Turner, coined the phrase Celeb Scholar™. A Celeb Scholar is more than just a person who has a doctorate who is an academic researcher or critical thinking, but one who is a worldwide Influencer within social media, education, technology, media outlets, and our world. I also research the influence of entertainers, musicians, athletes, & public figures to bring forth data and results on how their influence causes positive or negative effects to us all as citizens in our world. So, yes, this is a unique way to FLEX a doctorate degree, but not a way that is foreign to us as academics. In my eyes, as a Celeb Scholar, this is the direction that we in the world need to go when it comes to utilizing our doctorate degrees that can make a difference in our world in a revolutionary way. It is not just about authoring the books/articles, teaching the classes, and grading papers as earned doctorate degree holders at colleges and universities. The ultimate call is of a greater reach in this new age of our doctorate degree earner. The call is for us as academics is to, of course, serve the citizens of the world as thought leaders, but also, a significant call is out for us to be seen as creators, influencers, and positive figures outside of the classrooms of the campus’ ivory towers in the communities and through media outlets. This is a call that if we want to, as doctors, continue to be considered to provide solutions to thousands, even millions, of the world’s most intense problems and situations that we must start to answer in this new way in this time that we are living in.
The typical distinction between being the great DOCTOR who yearns for the world to acknowledge them, whether on the college campuses or in the communities they work in, must now realize that many wonders do the title of “Doctor” deserve the same recognition as it did in previous times? The “Doctor,” who was once known as a stoic figure of prestige and excellence, has retreated so much so into the offices and meeting rooms of higher education institutions that they do not have the time to bring as much significance, knowledge, or change to the communities as they may have used to do in times past.
The consistent allure of reaching the next level of tenure has kept the “Doctor” from being a seen figure of direction and hope that the communities that they live in need to see more of. The goal of becoming a doctor and utilizing the degree to serve the greater good in incredible ways is still a dream of many doctorate students as they go through the years of learning to receive that illustrious doctorate degree. Unfortunately, what is failed to be taught in these doctoral courses to these students is how outside of academia, the earned doctorate degree can still be utilized by the completer of this great degree to reach the masses in ways that inspire in the technology sectors, bridge learning gaps from the urban to rural communities, and influence the world through social, mainstream, and mass media platforms. Doctors are needed in our world now more than ever and it is time that they bring their doctorate degrees along with their swag, style, and influence and help change the world for the better in an even more positive, inspiring, and influential way.
