Dr. Mike Robinson: The New NFL Policy Requires Players To Either Stand For The National Anthem Or Stay In The Locker Room. What Are Your Thoughts on the NFL’s National Anthem policy?
Dr. Henry M Carter: The 32 NFL team owners have adopted a National Anthem policy for the players that has missed the mark. The NFL gave the players the option of staying in the locker room if they will not stand for the National Anthem. If they refuse to stand while on the field, the team will have to pay a fine. Instead of committing to address the root cause of the kneeling protest which is racism and police violence towards people of color, the NFL moved in the direction of silencing players who would like to bring light to social injustices. Former President John F. Kennedy stated, "Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." The fundamental purpose of protest is to bring attention to a grievance with the expectation that change will occur. If someone in powers dictates how, when and where you should protest, it isn't a protest. The NFL is on the wrong side of history and will reap swift actions from all people who believe that freedom of speech is a right not a privilege Commentary by Dr. Henry M Carter.
