Dr. Michael A. Robinson: What are your thoughts on the 14-day jail sentence for actress Felicity Huffman?
Kelly Williams-Bolar: People need to understand I try my best not to judge anyone. However, our justice system is not equal. Mrs. Huffman never had a mug shot. She received a jail sentence of only 14-days because of the prosecutors. Once the trial was completed, the judge gave her time to prepare to serve her 14-day sentence. She was given time to get her affairs in order. In my case, I had to go to jail at that very moment of sentencing. I was not granted a grace period, I did not have time to take care of any business or get my children situated. I was taken directly to jail.
Dr. Michael A. Robinson: What was your sentence and how much time did you serve?
Kelly Williams-Bolar: I was sentenced to 10 days in the county. My sentencing also included 70 hours of community service and 3 years of probation.
Dr. Michael A. Robinson: What happened to your father while you were going through your ordeal?
Kelly Williams-Bolar: My Father was charged, but the prosecutors had to drop charges. Once the charges were dropped they looked for any possible new charges and as a result of their efforts my father was charged with stealing medical health care. I actually can not recall the amount of dollars they claimed he stolen in medical health care. I understand it was an extremely high dollar amount. It may have been $90 or $100. It was crazy what they did to him. As a result of the charge, my father served a year the Ohio State Penitentiary. He would later pass away while locked up.
Dr. Michael A. Robinson: How are your children doing now? What type of education do you think they received over the years of their public school experiences?
Kelly Williams-Bolar: I have two daughters, Kayla and Jada. They are doing well now. They received a quality education, especially Jada, my youngest. Jada went to a private school for most of her middle and high school years. An anonymous person heard of my story and gave my daughter tuition to be used for private school. I am grateful for the blessing and remarkable act of kindness.
My oldest daughter Kayla, on the other hand had a harder time with public school. Her challenges were with the behaviors of peers and the quality of schools she had to attend.
Dr. Michael A. Robinson: What advice do you give to parents who want the best education for their children?
Kelly Williams-Bolar: My advice to parents. Please continue to stay involved in your child's education. Stay connected to the classroom.
