Dr. Michael Robinson:The idea of social distancing in schools is laughable when you consider the social dynamics and proximity inherent to the school experiences. The only logical way carry out social distancing would be the current guidance of half capacity schools and remote learning approaches. Limited movement, frequent hand washing and more.
Dr. Mike Robinson: Is Schooling with social distancing even possible?
Dr. Michael Robinson: Schooling and social distancing is possible where the training and support infrastructure is in place. It is not a one sized fits all piece. My current district of 17,000 students put in place supports to make a hybrid approach feasible. Other more rural places and poorer places may not be able to pull it off.
Dr. Mike Robinson: Staggered start times; alternate weeks of attendance; remote learning until further notice.
Dr. Michael Robinson: Parent support and training in remote learning and emergency management is essential. All of the aforementioned things can work with effective efforts and supports.
Dr. Mike Robinson: What are thoughts about teaches wearing masks and other PPE?
Dr. Michael Robinson: I am fine with teachers wearing PPE as it can be a matter of life and death and public health.
Dr. Mike Robinson: This question comes from a parent. "When schools are open, what signs would be visible that would suggest social distancing is working?
Dr. Michael Robinson: The metric for whether or not this is the spread of the disease. If it rages on, it is a fail, if it is slowed it is working.
